We are committed to doing our part to help the environment. Problems like global warming and the reduction of natural resources are a reality we must face and take upon ourselves to help solve. Everyone can do their part and at FTF we do as much as we can. In our stores, we use towels, bathroom tissue, and copy paper made from recycled materials. We use green or eco-friendly cleaning products wherever possible. We recycle paper and bottles in all our locations and we use LEED sustainable lighting in as many stores as possible. All of our stores use recyclable shopping bags made from 10% post-consumer recycled material.

Fashion To Figure was founded by Nicholas and Michael Kaplan, the great-grandsons of Lena H. Bryant, the revolutionary businesswoman and visionary dressmaker who invented full-fashion more than 110 years ago. As a widow in the late 1800s, "Gram" pawned a pair of diamond earrings to buy a sewing machine so that she could make dresses to support her family. Responding to a full-figured customer's request for something both pretty and practical for entertaining, Gram sparked a fashion revolution with her design. Generations of our family built Gram's business into a national chain of stores before the company was sold in the 1980s. Gram used to say that you should "never ask women to conform their figures to fashion but rather bring fashion to the figure." Bringing fashion to the figure continues to be our passion today. Below is a brief history of how we got here.

1879 — Lena Himmelstein, the great-grandmother of FTF's founders is born in Lithuania.
1895 — Lena journeys to New York to live with family, but is forced to work for $1 a week in a sweatshop on Lispenard Street.
1900 — Lena marries a jeweler named David Bryant, who sadly passes away due to illness. Lena is left with next to nothing.
1901 — To make ends meet, Lena pawns the earnings for enough money to open a bridalwear business from home.
1904 — Upon request, Lena creates the first maternity dress in the USA. Such garments were socially forbidden at the time.
1907 — On her bank deposit slip, Lena accidentally misspells her first name as "Lane". She keeps the name on her new shopfront.
1909 — Lena marries Albert Malsin, who manages the business and oversees its rapid growth.
1911 — The New York Herald finally runs an advertisement for the store. Within hours, the entire maternity stock has sold out.
1917 — At the suggestion of Mr. Malsin, the store begins offering plus-sized clothing in addition to maternity wear.
1923 — Albert Malsin passes away. At this time the business is earning over $5 million, more then 50% coming from plus-size sales.
1938 — Raphael Malsin, Lena's first son, is elected President and CEO. During his tenure, the company expands nationwide.
1951 — Lena passes away at 72. She leaves behind a successful business that began 20 years before women were even allowed to vote.
1977 — Steven B. Kaplan, husband of Lena's granddaughter and father of FTF's founders, is named president of the company.
1982 — The family business is sold to The Limited Brands after 85 years of independent ownership.
2004 — Inspired by their family history, Michael and Nicholas Kaplan create Fashion to Figure, a new full-fashion experience.
2005 — Fashion to Figure opens its second store in Livingston, NJ.
2006 — Fashion to Figure opens its third store in Elizabeth, NJ.
2008 — Fashion to Figure opens its fourth store in Valley Stream, NY. The new design concept focuses on contemporary style by anyone's definition, and will be used as prototype for future FTF locations.
2010 — Fashion to Figure opens its fifth and sixth stores in Bronx, NY and Brooklyn, NY respectively.
2011 — Fashion To Figure opens its seventh store in Yonkers, NY and schedules its eighth and ninth store openings in Cherry Hill, NJ and Prince Georges, MD.

"I moved to this area 3 years ago from Brooklyn. Since I moved to Orange County I have never been able to find a trendy plus size clothing store like the many in the NYC. I was very impressed with the store as well as the staff you had when I shopped there on Sunday October 19, 2009. I would like to tell you that if you were to open a store in either Poughkeepsie or Middletown New York you would make a killing. I have been in sales my whole life and there is a great need for a store like this in these areas. Good luck and much success and I will continue to drive down to Nyak to visit your store even if it is an hour away it's worth the trip."
